Chapter 1 of your Morocco story most likely begins in Marrakech, the cosmopolitan place that is the country’s first Imperial City.
Here you will find riads that iconic fashion designers (ie Yves Saint Laurent) made into their homes and the world’s most creative continue to covet; restaurants helmed by French chefs and outposts of internationally renowned spots; and tops travel lists of trendsetters. Marrakech is very hip, its artistic soul a coveted aesthetic, and its real estate market booming with international buyers. Come and stay for awhile if you want Euro-chic city life with an Arabic twist at a (potentially) more modest price than in Europe.
This is also where I began my journey, enveloped by palm trees in the lush grounds of my resort, browsing for trinkets in the markets, twirling into maxi dresses in verdant gardens, tucking into French-meets-Moroccan cuisine while watching the sunset from a rooftop. Not quite an adventure but a gentle introduction for what’s yet to come. Some don’t make it past the boho-luxe city, and I can’t blame them, life isn’t just good here, it’s exciting when you’re young with money to spend. But I do implore you to not spend too many of your vacation days here when the expanse of the Sahara sits at Marrakech’s doorstep.
