Chapter 2 takes me out to the desert. Organized by @CorazondeMarruecos and @DihyaDesertCamps, a car takes me to explore the expansive Erg Chebbi on the far west of the Sahara. This is the desert at its finest, with enormous mountains of dunes.
First stop was to an oasis where ribbons of water glisten in the valleys of the sand. Is this a dream? It sure feels that way.
The overcast skies give a post apocalyptic feel to the abandoned mine we stop at next. Decades of windblown sand do its best to bury the structures. I climb up to take in the vastness below. This used to all be covered by an ocean, and the desert floor is full of fossils. I ask about dinosaurs, but am shown a shark tooth instead. I buy a polished ammonite from a vendor, a spiral of an ancient sea creature.
The ride continues. We take a break to enjoy a cup of tea under a shady tent in an informal Bedouin settlement. Only a small family lives here with their goats. It’s temporary but they have been there for 10 years. Tip them well since work is few and far between.
We visit a lake. It’s dazzling and large. I’m sure the story of the desert for many begins and ends at this lake. The temperature is high and the desert is massive.
The tour is less about specific locations than the landscape that morphs in front of me, from soft, high dunes, to rocky Martian terrain, to tufts of greenery and flowers, to those surprising bodies of water. Villages come and go and I did have a fantastic meal in one of them. Call me a tourist but I always love seeing camels even though they all belong to someone and are shepherded this way or that, not exactly wildlife at its most natural.
Should you venture all the way out for this remoteness? Yes. You have the Sahara at its most beautiful, along with its rugged, a scale hard to imagine. It’s peaceful even as the car bumps and slides on the uneven ground. Plus the guide (organized by @CorazondeMarruecos) is fantastic.
